Notes

A long route to a remote mountain with narrow ridges and deep corries. This is a classic and a must for lovers of wild places.

Here we provide the nearest town to the start of the route where you will find basic services.

We then give directions from that location to the route start. Your approach route may differ.

Travel Information

Head to: Mallaig

From Mallaig take the ferry to Inverie (NG767000). N.B. there is no road access to the Knoydart Penninsula.

Usually the shortest way to climb the mountain, making best use of tracks and paths to gain altitude. Route navigation requires map reading skills and an ability to navigate with a compass.

The information given here will enable you to annotate your map and plan your route. We do not give anecdotal descriptions on where to find the paths, worn by the feet of previous mountaineers.

Where the access routes are few or the ridge is narrow, paths are generally obvious. On open ground, following paths without using your compass may get you lost in poor visibility.

Superb mountain - excellent position, brilliant views on a good day plus bit of scrambling

Walked in from Kinlochhourn and went over Luinne/M Buidhe - stayed in Inverie and walked back to KLHourn over Ladhar B. Long tiring walk both ways 9.5 day 1 8.5 day 2. Inverie lovely - Old Forge VG - The Gathering VG B&B. If you can afford both time and money PLEASE take the Mallaig boat and take 3 nights in Inverie. With a bit of extra weight the walk in etc was very tiring - but do-able if you're short of time. Will go back to Inverie - by boat.

What a fantastic hill. I parked the car at Kinloch Hourn walked along the path to Barrisdale and walked up the NE ridge after the shielings. It's a long steep pull but in a cloudless sky was fantastic. After the summit descend SE ridge to Mam Barrisdale. Stay in the Ind. Bothy GR 871 041 which costs £3 and has electric and running water & toilet (internet site Barisdale.com *note spelling*). I then climbed the other 2 Munros and walked back out the same day. A motorboat can save you the 2hr walk in but he'll only take the luggage in bad weather for the same price.

Climbed this mountain on a cold day in late March some years ago. Started from Inverie climbing west shoulder, up over summit ridge and then back to Inverie via Aonach Sgoithe. Being perched on the end of the Knoydart Peninsular views from summit ridge fantastic taking in Ardnamurchan, the Sea of the Hebrides, the Small Isles and Skye as well as closer views to the east of the "Rough Bounds", Sgurr na Ciche and far below, Loch Nevis & Loch Hourn. The summit ridge is narrow in places with great cliffs falling into the Mountain's northern corries. One of my best ever days in the hills.
