Route Waypoint Map

The total ascent is 775 metres. Allow 3.5 hours to complete this 10.41 km route.

Usually the shortest way to climb the mountain, making best use of tracks and paths to gain altitude. Route navigation requires map reading skills and an ability to navigate with a compass.

The information given here will enable you to annotate your map and plan your route. We do not give anecdotal descriptions on where to find the paths, worn by the feet of previous mountaineers.

Where the access routes are few or the ridge is narrow, paths are generally obvious. On open ground, following paths without using your compass may get you lost in poor visibility.

For a bit of a different, circular and more interesting route, take the valley path that leads out of Ambleside and keeps to the south of the Struggle as you wqalk generally in the direction of the Kirkstone Pass. You hit the Struggle about 400 metres from the top close to the Kirkstone Inn. Turn into the hill across the car park and go up the front of the hill using a stepped path in summer but in winter pick your way through the crags or use the corrie if the snows in consolidated state. Visit the trig point and walk off via the long ridge down into Ambleside. A nice little 4hr walk.
