The total ascent is 888 metres. Allow 4 hours to complete this 11.22 km route.

In winter months please check the local snow conditions at sais.gov.uk.

The hillphones service can inform you of stalking activities in the area.

Usually the shortest way to climb the mountain, making best use of tracks and paths to gain altitude. Route navigation requires map reading skills and an ability to navigate with a compass.

The information given here will enable you to annotate your map and plan your route. We do not give anecdotal descriptions on where to find the paths, worn by the feet of previous mountaineers.

Where the access routes are few or the ridge is narrow, paths are generally obvious. On open ground, following paths without using your compass may get you lost in poor visibility.

Started at Achnashellach taking the right of way track. When one arrives at the split in the track you take the left fork and have the crossing of the River Lair to negotiate. In spate this might be tricky. I then followed another good path underneath Fuar Tholl, before accessing the ridge via Coire Mainreachan. Ascending to the left of the Mainreachan buttress. This climb was done in winter conditions but even so the ascent was no more than a steep plod. From the top of coire its an easy walk to the summit. Retraced my route back to the car. Fantastic views, great hill; dog friendly.

Initial approach is a well defined path, though quite steep in places. A few fords to cross, but after a rain free week these were easy as there were plenty of stepping stones, however it wouldn't take much to cover them. Final part of the ascent is scramble up a loose scree slope which is quite hard going, but well worth the effort.
