Usually the shortest way to climb the mountain, making best use of tracks and paths to gain altitude. Route navigation requires map reading skills and an ability to navigate with a compass.

The information given here will enable you to annotate your map and plan your route. We do not give anecdotal descriptions on where to find the paths, worn by the feet of previous mountaineers.

Where the access routes are few or the ridge is narrow, paths are generally obvious. On open ground, following paths without using your compass may get you lost in poor visibility.

route initially on good path gets you off to good start, gets better as day goes on especially when on ridge proper and weaving thro rocky tops to summit and one of best views I've had in years of hillwalking. Mull, Rhum, eigg, muck, Harris, skye, West coast munros awesome, make sure save for good visibility day - isolated location means great perspective.

This is much the most practicable route as there is a good track from Scotstown over to Pollach which gets the ascent off to a nice start. Thereafter the route presents some navigational problems with a very wide col area of raised rocky ridges separated by boggy stream channels to be crossed, leading to steep ascent on tussocky grass interspersed with minor crags - so allow time for local routefinding. The highlight is the switchback summit ridge, which has 6 hummocks: the middle 2 are bypassed to N. Excellent distant vistas but nothing close, so choose good clear visibility to enjoy best.
