Usually the shortest way to climb the mountain, making best use of tracks and paths to gain altitude. Route navigation requires map reading skills and an ability to navigate with a compass.

The information given here will enable you to annotate your map and plan your route. We do not give anecdotal descriptions on where to find the paths, worn by the feet of previous mountaineers.

Where the access routes are few or the ridge is narrow, paths are generally obvious. On open ground, following paths without using your compass may get you lost in poor visibility.

A grand walk on a nice day. Our alternative ascent took us up through Blackcraigs and onto Mount Een. We then followed the track round to Wester Cairn where we ascended to the cairn and the across the saddle to Mount Battock. Our descent was the ascent route as described in the route information. This horseshoe gave us a good circular route of 16km. And, at the time of writing, the electric fence isn't electrified!

Written by Brenda Dunnett on 12 Aug 2007:
The tracks are currently being rebuilt and extended. However, the landowner has installed an electrified fence to replace the one shown on the OS maps, and this makes access to the cairn and trig point rather awkward!
