Route Waypoint Map

The total ascent is 1,120 metres. Allow 7 hours to complete this 23.48 km route.

In winter months please check the local snow conditions at sais.gov.uk.

The hillphones service can inform you of stalking activities in the area.

Usually the shortest way to climb the mountain, making best use of tracks and paths to gain altitude. Route navigation requires map reading skills and an ability to navigate with a compass.

The information given here will enable you to annotate your map and plan your route. We do not give anecdotal descriptions on where to find the paths, worn by the feet of previous mountaineers.

Where the access routes are few or the ridge is narrow, paths are generally obvious. On open ground, following paths without using your compass may get you lost in poor visibility.

Started at 433m point on the Straiton road, headed across heathery bog to the coll between Shalloch and Caerloch Dhu, then south east to summit of Shalloch on Minnoch (1 hour 40 minutes), then on to Tarfessock ( 2hours 30 minutes), then a long slog through boggy territory to steep southern face of Kirriereoch Hill on to summit plateau. ( 3 hours 45 minutes) Then a relatively easy descent and up the steep ridge "Little Spear"to summit of Merrick (4 hours 30 minutes). Then for the first time in the day a broad obvious path all the way down to Loch Trool car park ( 6 hours 15 minutes).

After crossing the Water of Minnoch at the bridge at NX361899 there is a new bulldozed path (not shown on the map) which continues straight ahead (roughly E) along the side of the forestry plantation. There is a temptation to follow this, but the track shown on the map to the deserted Shalloch on Minnoch farm is on the right immediately after crossing the bridge.

The route described here is exactly the same as the Corbett guide book. I walked this route wit hseveral friends among who a couple had completed well over 100 munro's and god knows how many corbetts all agreed it was one of the worst routes they had ever endured through very boggy terrain and heather with absolutely no footpath whatsoever those determined to add this to their corbbet tally should seriously consider doing tis in reverse also bear in mind that there is very heavy logging work in progress at present and that the landscape has changed quite considerably.
