 Notes
This route to Hart Fell starts on the path leading to Hartfell Spa, thereafter it is on easy slopes. Navigation is simple as it is a walk up the slopes on one side of a valley and down the slopes on the other. It does however take you close to crags.

Here we provide the nearest town to the start of the route where you will find basic services.

We then give directions from that location to the route start. Your approach route may differ.

In winter months please check the local snow conditions at sais.gov.uk.

The hillphones service can inform you of stalking activities in the area.

Usually the shortest way to climb the mountain, making best use of tracks and paths to gain altitude. Route navigation requires map reading skills and an ability to navigate with a compass.

The information given here will enable you to annotate your map and plan your route. We do not give anecdotal descriptions on where to find the paths, worn by the feet of previous mountaineers.

Where the access routes are few or the ridge is narrow, paths are generally obvious. On open ground, following paths without using your compass may get you lost in poor visibility.

Having seen the comments about not finding a place to cross the river on the way down, I came off Swatte Fell rather than go on to Blue Cairn, descending next to the gulley and crossed the river at NT 10391 11480. Just on the other side of the river is the remains of the old track (not marked on the map) to rejoin the ascent route. On the ascent, I would also recommend going up the top of the shoulder (following the quad bike track) as soon as you cross the fence at NT 08529 10856 instead of following the path on the map which takes you to a much steeper ascent.

A nice walk up the valley - but a fairly non-descript hill - the crags on the other side of the corrie look more interesting. Route needs to be clearer on where the crossing point is across the burn on the way back - as there is no obvious one - and many fences to climb.
