Where the access routes are few or the ridge is narrow, paths are generally obvious. On open ground, following paths without using your compass may get you lost in poor visibility.

This is a lovely hill for a gentle day. Easy walking and excellent views pretty much all the way from Auchallater, much the best route. Apart from the short zigzags on the vehicle track to the crest on Sron Dubh the going is excellent, short heather, turf and a few rocky patches at the summit. Nothing steep. Views are excellent with the hills west of the Cairnwell very well seen. Glas Tulaichean is clear and Glas Maol looks enormous. Nice view of Loch Callater too. Only the high Cairngorms are obscured by Morrone. I'd only recommend the route from the north, the other is utilitarian.
