Meall Mor [Glencoe]

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

Description

Meall Mor lies due S of Glencoe Village and is seen directly ahead when passing the turn off for the Clachaig Inn when driving W along the A82.

Its summit ridge forms a horseshoe around a corrie on the N side.

Due to its proximity to the Graham Sgorr a' Choise, the 2 may be readily combined together.

General Considerations

Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.

Wind usually increases with altitude.

Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.

River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

Started from the head of Pass of Glencoe 1 mile past Clachaig Inn.There is space for 6 cars on the verge to the right.Walked to the bridge over the road and turned sharp left on to a Farm track.After some sheds, broke on to the hill and slogged up the steep face.This gets very dramatic as you look back to the very impressive views of Aonach Eagach ridge.Bidean and Pap of Glencoe.The view down the Pass is un rivaled.The best possible view.As you gain height,The views of Mamores and Ben Nevis open up.The summit is a long flat ridge with a small Cairn.From here you are treated to magnificent views of Loch Linnhe and the mighty Beinn a Bheithir and out to open Sea.The views of Aonach Eagach ridge.Bidean Sgor na-Ulaidh. Meall Lighiche.Aonach Dubh a Ghlinne and the next target of the day, the impressive looking sharp rising slopes of Sgor a Choise.Leave this one for a clear day as it has some of the best views in The Highlands
