Windy Standard

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Routes

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

Meaning

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

Description

Windy Standard is part of the Carsphairn Hills, lying to the NE of the Corbett Cairnsmore of Carsphairn which is the highest in the group.

Perhaps unsurprising given its name, Windy Standard plays host to a large wind farm which at the time of building was the 2nd largest in Scotland.

Due to forestry on the N side of the hill, an approach from the S is recommended.

General Considerations

Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.

Wind usually increases with altitude.

Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.

River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

Recommend approach from the Water of Ken (approach from the east). It keeps the wind turbines out of sight until you get to the top. Leave the car park along the forest track going NW. After a mile cut up through the trees to the ridge. Follow the fence west along the ridge, down to the boggy bealach, and up to the "summit" ridge. I counted 32 turbines from the trig point - there are more out of sight. Be sure to follow the fence leading SE from the top. There is one that goes SW and in a cloud was tempted to head into the wrong glen. Stay on the ridge. No path in the unkempt glen!

If you don't want to get your feet wet, this is a good one to go on. Park at the end of Glen Afton and follow the track into Carsphairn Forest (it will double back on itself twice). The road up to the summit area is fairly obvious as it's the only one which has been driven on. For a traverse (involves marshy terrain) the hill can instead be ascended by leaving the track at the forest gate and follow the fences over Lamb Hill, Wedder hill & Millaneoch Hill with a final pull up to the top, before returning by the forest road.
