This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

A description of the characteristics of the mountain including any hazards of which you should be aware.

  Description
Fairfield (2500ft+) lies E of Dunmail Raise Pass, SW of Patterdale and N of the town of Ambleside in the Lake District (England). Its summit is broad and rounded, and its SE, SW and NW slopes though steep are mainly grassy. The NE aspect is in sharp contrast, with precipitous crags overlooking upper Deepdale, perhaps the roughest of all the corries in Lakeland.

There are 4 ridges radiating towards the cardinal points. The W ridge descends steeply to Grisedale Hause. The rocky N ridge runs over Cofa Pike pinnacle (820m contour) then descends with scrambling down to Deepdale Hause, linking with St.Sunday Crag (2500ft+) . The broad E ridge turns SE and descends gently over Hart Crag (822m) to Dove Crag (792m); and the broad S ridge with its rougher E slopes leads to Great Rigg (766m). The only route to the summit which displays the fine crags to advantage (without detour) is an ascent via the NE ridge, which is conveniently coupled with a traverse of St.Sunday Crag.

Very fit walkers not put off by the arduous descent to Grisedale Tarn and similarly steep re-ascent of Dollywagon Pike can then return to Patterdale via Helvellyn (3000ft+) bagging 3 peaks in one outing. Long S ridges from both Dove Crag and Great Rigg enable a lengthy yet gently-graded ridge walk (the ‘Fairfield Horseshoe’) to be undertaken from Ambleside.

Hazards you may encounter on Fairfield include
 Steep slopes on or near ascent routes.
 Stony/rocky Slopes on or near ascent routes.
 Crags near summit.
 
General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

1 1040 m 13.27 km 4.5 hrs Fairfield and St.Sunday Crag (The Cape)  Traverse over St.Sunday Crag is simple, with excellent views. Extension to Fairfield involves scrambling over Cofa Pike then steep descent to Grisedale Hause.  
2 1010 m 17.05 km 5.5 hrs Fairfield  Longer route (the ‘Fairfield Horseshoe’) from Ambleside, on gently-graded ridges none-the-less requires stamina. Summit near crags to north.
