Meall Lighiche

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

Description

Meall Lighiche has a curved summit ridge running from Meall Lighiche in the W to Creag Bhan in the E. From Meall Lighiche, a broad ridge runs W to Meall an Aodainn (678m) at the head of Glen Creran and from Creag Bhan a second ridge runs N into Gleann Leac-na-muidhe.

These two ridges offer alternative ascent routes, with the N ridge being the conventional route. Whilst the extremities of the ridges are craggy, Meall Lighiche itself is relatively crag free apart from the summit which is more rocky.

Started from a lay by on the A82 just beyond the exit for Clachaig Inn.Walked to a bridge on the road and then sharp left up a farm track.There are Highland Cattle on the loose here but they were ok.Meall Mor was the first target of the day.Rising steeply up its face from this track.The views are superb down the A82.Meall Lighiche comes well in to view about half way up.After summiting Meall Mor it was on wards to a big drop in to the valley over rough ground and over a few Burns.Eventualy got on the right side of Allt na-muidhe and on to a good track that takes you out to the main route for Sgorr na h-Ulaidh.Headed South here and up grass slopes to a small Cairn.Going west for about half a mile and met a line of iron fence posts.Steep up to the flat slab and the cairn.Views to Beinn a Beither and Sgor na h-Ulaidh and so many more over at The Mamores.Bidean.Aonach Eagach and the striking looking Sgorr a Choise.If doing Sgor na-h Ulaidh next, connect on the high col.

Really worthwhile nipping up this hill during the ascent of neighbouring Munro Sgor na h-Ulaidh. The view from Meall Lighiche proved very beneficial in spotting a good route through the craggy slopes of the Munro above the bealach the two peaks share.
