Beinn a' Chaisteil [Auch]

This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Mountain names are usually in Gaelic, the native language of the Scottish Highlands, or have been derived from the old Scots and Norse languages. We give the most commonly accepted meaning, but accept that some of these are disputed.

The UK is covered by 204 Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 scale maps. Maps numbered 1 to 86 cover Scotland but for the highest mountains (Munros) only 23 maps are required. The name given roughly describes the area covered by the map.

  Description
Beinn a' Chaisteil and Beinn nam Fuaran (Corbett) are sister peaks, on the E side of Gleann Ach'-innis Chailein, connected by a col (545m), and are climbed as a pair.

Beinn a' Chaisteil, the more S of the pair, is composed of two ridges in an "L" shape. The S and W upper slopes are very rocky, but the hill can be climbed via the SE or NE ridges with ease on moderate slopes.

Hazards you may encounter on Beinn a' Chaisteil [Auch] include
 Crags on or near ascent routes.
 Crags near summit.
 
General Considerations
 Temperature decreases by 1degree C for every 100m of ascent.
 Wind usually increases with altitude.
 Visibility can change markedly with cloud level.
 River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.

Bruce July 01 2009. The last of 5 Corbetts for the day. Ascended ridge vie bealach from Fuaran. This was a long steepish grind...more Cleggs (Horse Flies). Great views on the way down into the glen Chailein. Watch out for the crags!

Summer 2011 saw me doing the neighbouring Corbetts of Beinn Chaorach and Beinn Odhar. This is a very mountainous area and dramatic in fine weather. Beinn a Chaisteil is over shadowed by its more famous neighbour Beinn Dorain but do not let that fool you into thinking it's a stroll. Walked the WHW along Beinn Odhar and turned right. Just before a white building and in to Glen Coralan, there is a river to cross on stony slabs. It would be a problem in spate but not today. Rather than walk the length of Beinn a' Chaisteil and up the easier south ridge I took it head on. This is steep and relentless going with some steep crags to clear before the easy walk up grassy slopes to the small summit cairn. The views off these steep slopes are well worth the effort with Beinn Dorain looking dramatic in the ever changing early winter light. All the Auch Corbetts are in fine view as well as a good look over to the northern Blackmount.
