Ben Vorlich [Loch Lomond]

Munro

Quick Facts
This is the height of the mountain above sea level. However, on the climb, it is the ascent that matters, i.e. the sum of all the uphill parts of the route.
Altitude
943 m (3093 ft)

This is the standard notation used on Ordnance Survey Landranger maps.

Each reference consists of two letters identifying a 100,000 metre square block then three digits defining the Easting and finally the three digits defining the Northing with reference to the South West corner of the block.

NN166712 is the grid reference for the summit of Ben Nevis. Where you are given the map number ( For Ben Nevis = 41) it is acceptable to omit the two initial letters e.g. 166712. (Instructions on how to read the references are given on the OS maps).

Jason Glencross and Jason Mullen walked this route ( 5 July 2009)and it was our second Munro, what a difference from Ben Lomond, few paths and not any people about, Loved it, but have to brush up on my map reading skills. Next munro is the other Ben Volich on 11/07/09

Climbed with Stu. Went up from the west side of the mountain, missed the path by a mile & ended up scrambling up the steep hillside. It stayed dry until the summit then chucked it down. Came down the path. Will remember where he path is for the future, it's marked by a small cairn at the side of the road. Enjoyed the day, the steep climb was good & we saw some views you wouldn't get on the path route

Attempted this mountain from the east, Ardlui, then burn up from Stuckendroin, keeping Stuc na Nughhirin and Little Hills on our left.Very tough going once at the snowline, with groin deep (again!) drifts. Attempted summit just north of small lochan to come out at the 931m point. Were within spitting distance, unfortunately the snow was too packed, and an ice axe/crampons are items I have yet to add to my kit list! 50 feet would have done it. Damn!

Did this route in reverse, taking a right at the junction by the pylon-station and heading up the SE ridge. No path and pretty hard going at times, but great places to rest and take in the views. A few false summits on the way up. Came down the path to the dam and were glad we hadn't ascended that way as it's pretty steep and relentless. A great day though with great walking weather.

Not as bad as a few of the commets would have you believe. The route up from just before the dam is steep, but no steeper than many other Munros. 2 hours to the summit from the wee cairn and one hour decent back to the same place makes for a short and enjoyable day with an easy walk in and out on tarmac roads.
