Mountain Description
|

|
Bidein a' Choire Sheasgaich is a remote mountain at the W tip of Loch Monar. It has a steep sided summit cone close to the craggy NE face and at the convergence of three ridges. The SW ridge narrows as it approaches Sail Riabhach which overlooks Bendronaig Lodge by the Black Water. From the lodge a track connects to Attadale on the A890. The N ridge is very craggy yet is the normal ascent route from Beinn Tharsuinn. The route follows a dry-stone wall then a grassy gully to avoid the worst of the rocky ascent. The third ridge to the SE with its rocky N slopes connects to Lurg Mhor via a broad col.

Cycle in from Attadale took 2hrs with a lot of pushing in very hot weather and quick descent from high pass to bothy. return trip took 1hr 15mins as steeper section on downhill (ensure brakes good). Actual walk from bothy took 5 hrs for both munros - after crossing swing bridge skirted Creag Dubh onto Sail Riabhach and easy walking to final steep pull onto B.a'C.Sheasgaich then 1hr between summits and descended from bealach SW to meet head of Loch Calavie.

We elected to tackle this mountain along with Lurgh Mohr by cycling in from Attadale to the estate run bothy at Bendronaig. This was quicker than walking the more commonly recommended route of walking from Craig, but the cycle proved to be more difficult than anticipated with a lot of pushing up very steep sections required - even on the downhill parts great care has to be taken as the path is fairly rough and coming off the bike is a highly probable. Take a spare tube and spanners as punctures are a common hazard. The bothy itself is excellent and well maintained by the estate. Worth a visit.
