... which is a nuisance, because the path with the sign at the bottom is the most impassable quagmire in the solar system!

At the start of the recommended route (Alltnacaillich) there is a sign saying the best parking and route lies farther north at the big barn, this is where the sign is saying way up ben hope. Someone obviously doesnt want walkers starting near the small holdings!!

Climbed Ben Hope on Saturday the 22nd Sept in horrible conditions. The only reason we went up was to accompany Brian who was finishing his round of the Munros. The rain had turned the path into a river and the hillside was a mud bath. However all this was irrelevant when we reached the top and the celebrations began. Well done Brian.

Judging by the size of the parking space, the sign "way up Ben Hope" and the well trodden path, then a lot of people are starting from the "big barn" at NC 46204765, and not from the longer route recommended above. Did the round trip with a break at the top in 4 hrs, although unfortunately the top was in cloud.

Climbed this yesterday. The path tends to go straight up so no easy zig-zag! Easy to navigate but don't rely on path as the boggy ground tends to make it disappear in places. With most hills it could be misleading coming off if the cloud base is low which came down on us! but only lasted a few minutes. View was a bit cloudy at top still could see the north sea - It was freezing at top - needed hat and gloves - can't imagine what its like in winter. I think the narrow single track road leading up was harder to guage than the hill itself lol! Good parking though.

My favourite Munro to date- we left torrential rains behind in Edinburgh and had the best weather ever with views to Orkney and the beaches at Tongue and Durness-WOW!!
Easy path up from the "Big Barn" and then along the ridge to the top.
Surprisingly quick up and down in 4hours even with a toddler on our back!

I live near Thurso and have climbed Ben Hope more times than I care to admit and by far the most fulfilling ascent routes are either by one of the exposed ridges on the upper west buttress above the lochan or by the NE ridge. Both lead to the exposed edge beyond the prominent break in the ridge. From near the southern end of Loch Hope the Moine path can be followed for a mile or so up and parallel with the NE ridge until it heads away north from where either ascend one of the gullies or continue round to the snout of the ridge itself above the lochans to the east.

On the evening of May 11th 2005, we set off on the North ridge route. Our information ( this site and the Cameron McNeish Munro book), stated that the route went to the lochan and then the ridge behind. There are several ridges behind the lochan, and we chose the second from the left - mainly due to an obvious gully to the left, as per the description. The rock quality on this ridge was poor and the situation exposed and serious. We reached the top after some steep difficult and precarious ground.
I believe the correct route to be the 1st , lefthand ridge, not the one we followed.

I would recommend ascending by the North Ridge and descending by route described. The views expand magnificently - making the ascent less of a grind and you get a true appreciation of the mountain architecture and of its stunning location in this remote corner. I did an exhilirating scramble on a short vertical wall close to the west edge of the ridge with a very big drop to my right. Once above the wall the route to the summit is short and easy. There is also an easy gulley that provides a means to avoid the wall. A truly great mountain - spend a full day to savour all of it.

Made a 950 mile round trip this weekend with the chief aim of climbing Ben Hope in clear sunshine, and it was worth every last drop of fuel. The ascent is kind and brisk, and the views utterly breathtaking. If, as I was, you are lucky enough to be the only person on the summit, you will feel as if you are the only living person in the world, a mesmerised surveyor of some timeless, Tolkeinesque landscape. Top marks!

A rather easy to moderate climb with no difficulties and well within the capabilities of most people although it is a long slog. Huge flat summit with magnificent views all round. We climbed it in October on a glorious sunny day. Its neighbour Ben Loyal although not a Munro is a more interesting mountain and worth a climb.
